Technical research
The painting Christ Carrying the Cross has been subjected to a C14 analysis, executed by the Royal Institute of Art Heritage in Brussels. According to this research the canvas of the painting can be dated between the years 1400 and 1455. However, there is no reason to assume that the painting has been made in the same period. Fra Bartolommeo and almost all painters of his era still worked on panel; painting on canvas did not become popular in Florence until the second half of the 16th century. On several occasions works by Fra Bartolommeo have been transferred from panel to canvas in the 19th or 20th century. This also happened with, amongst others, his painting Salvator Mundi at the Galleria Palatina in Florence. Christ Carrying the Cross has probably already been transferred to canvas before the restoration in 1949, because this would otherwise have been indicated in the preserved documentation about this intervention on the back of the painting.
Therefore the dating of the medium of the artwork may be correct, but this was quite certainly not the original medium of the painting.
Conclusion
The painting Christ Carrying the Cross contains various features which are comparable to the work of Fra Bartolommeo, but the 1949 restoration intervention has made it impossible to conduct a more profound stylistic analysis to arrive at a concluding attribution.
